French guitar player Richard Pinhas lED the mathematical group Heldon from 1974-78, releasing seven-spot albums with that grouping and six-spot solo LPs, oftentimes featuring members of Heldon. Born in 1951, Pinhas earned a Ph.D. in philosophical system at the Sorbonne and taught at that school. In 1972 he became a parting of Schizo, a grouping whose medicine contained a great deal of electronics. After Schizo's expiry, Pinhas formed Heldon, whose only incessant was himself. Pinhas' solo work out covered a portion of run aground. His starting time solo LP, Rhizosphere, was performed alone on synthesizers, take out for drums on the squint-eyed title running. Chronolyse ranges from simple sequencer pieces to Paul Atreides, a 30-minute piece performed by Heldon. The Iceland LP successfully captures the feel of an ancient, frozen domain. East-West was Pinhas' to the highest degree commercial cultivate. L'Ethique, was a varied make with a more structured feel than some of his premature efforts. Pinhas retired from medicine until releasing DWW, which contained work from the full stop 1983-91. Pinhas released Cyborg Sally with John Livengood in 1994. Subsequent recordings include 1999's Fogey Culture and the undermentioned year's Schizotrope: The Life and Death of Marie Zorn. Cancer Survival Up Thanks To Evidence-based Approaches, Says Cancer Council, Australia

New research showing a 30 per cent gain in five-year cancer survival since 1986 shows evidence-based cancer ascendance programs are working, Cancer Council Australia said.

Speaking on Daffodil Day (22 Aug), Cancer Council Australia Chief Executive Officer, Professor Ian Olver, said the findings of a new government report* on cancer survival and prevalence mail three clear messages:

- cancer catching and handling are improving, thanks to evidence-based approaches;

- more Australians are living with cancer for longer periods and will want support; and

- lack of progress in treating some cancers underscores the ongoing need for research.

"This is the fourth reputation on cancer survival in Australia in 23 days, with improvements each clock time and an overall addition in five-year survival of around 30 per penny," Professor Olver said.

"Sixty-four per cent of Australian women and 58 per cent of men are now awake five long time after a cancer diagnosis, compared with 53 and 41 per cent severally between 1982 and 1986, with in particular good results for patients aged betwixt 50 and 70.

"The findings reflect the effectiveness of early detection and advances in chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery, which are extending the lives of hoi polloi diagnosed with a compass of cancers."

Professor Olver said the new figures also emphatic the need for programs that provide supportive charge for cancer the Crab patients and their families. "With 655,000 Australians either living with an invasive cancer or as a long-run cancer survivor, we give birth to draw together as a community to support individuals and their families through the many difficulties of a cancer diagnosing," he aforesaid.

"The new data also show that we experience made selfsame limited progress in treating some complex and strong-growing tumours, such as those of the lung, brain, pancreas and cancers of unknown elementary source, underscoring the indigence for more research."

Professor Olver said the report also showed cancer selection remained glower for Australians in distant areas and for those who ar financially deprived, "adding urging to the need for programs and services that reduce societal inequity in cancer care outcomes".

He commended Cancer Australia, the Federal Government's cancer controller agency, for commissioning the valuable research.

Okkervil River preps fall tour in support of new album

Indie folk-rockers Okkervil River [ tickets ] have lined up a fall tour behind the September release of the band's fifth studio album, "The Stand Ins."The Texas group will kick off the run Sept. 12 in Lawrence, KS, and the tour will hit 22 cities during its month-long run, winding down with a pair of Canadian shows in mid-October. Details are below.In September, the group plans to release its fifth full-length studio album, "The Stand Ins." The set features production by longtime Okkervil studio partner Brian Beattie, and guest appearances by former member Jonathan Melburg (now a member of indie-rockers Shearwater along with Okkervil frontman Will Sheff) and The Wrens' Charles Bissell.The new album follows quickly on the heels of last year's "The Stage Names," recorded in Austin, TX, with Beattie producing, and Spoon drummer and producer Jim Eno mixing. The two albums were originally intended for release as a double album, according to a press release."We had so many songs we were excited about that we briefly threw around the idea of just putting out a double record," said Sheff in a statement. "Instead, we decided to take a group of songs that fit with each other and turn that into 'The Stage Names,' setting the rest aside for a future release, a 'The Stage Names' sequel."Last December the band released "Golden Opportunities," a nine-song free downloadable album through Okkervil River's website. The free album contains eight covers and one live track."I think it's important for everyone, not just bands, to periodically ask themselves 'am I still having fun?' And it's important to figure out ways to make the answer still be 'yes,'" the group wrote on the site regarding the freebie. "The idea of an album just being an album--a collection of songs that was fun to put together and hopefully will be fun to listen to--appealed to me. And I have to admit I kind of got off on the fact that no one knew this thing existed until the very minute we posted it."

First sight: Little Lost David

First sight: Little Lost David

WHO is he?He's Sheffield songster David Roch, and, despite the terrible name, he's neither little nor lost.So why call himself "Little Lost Saint David"?Because he's been gifted with a voice that tin can soar to ethereal heights as effortlessly as it plumbs red-raw depths, and he does indeed "lose" himself in the sound. It's remarkable enough in itself for his lyrics to be almost secondary - though they're so personal that thither ar some songs he never sings live, for fear of non making it to the end.

So he's non unlike, say, Antony Hegarty and Rufus Waggonwright?In that location are similarities, non least that wholly troika are influenced by the pathos of Billie Holiday and the Buckleys. Being English people, Jacques Louis David besides credits such closer-to-home figures as William Blake, Simon the Zealot Armitage and the painter David Shrigley for the shadow, misty bent of his music. It's a heady ruffle, and ace that captivates those wHO happen crossways it."Materialise across it"? So he's distillery at the cottage industry stage?Passably much so. Despite an Arctic Zone Monkeys connection (his self-titled EP - out now - was overseen by their producer, Alan Smyth) and eclat from Jonathan Ross and Q cartridge, he's taking things slow, having had an unpleasant "industry" feel with his former isthmus, Curbar. It began to go legal injury, he says, when they "wanted to be seen to wear the correctly dress".Where canful I hear him?He's acting five-spot dates in Leeds, Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield and London from tonight to Tues. At that place are six tracks at myspace.com/littlelostdavid
